{"id":4483,"date":"2014-08-22T10:27:30","date_gmt":"2014-08-22T15:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4483"},"modified":"2014-08-22T10:34:51","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T15:34:51","slug":"automated-weather-station-revisited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4483","title":{"rendered":"Automated Weather Station &#8211; revisited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[today: rest day, yesterday: 3.4 miles]<\/p>\n<p>We are starting to get some heat around here recently!<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago the weather station in Starkville quit working.\u00a0 So last weekend I stopped by and collected the equipment to bring home and see what&#8217;s up.<\/p>\n<p>A recap:\u00a0 I purchased three weather station devices off of the GSA auction site.\u00a0 They are nice units from Vaisala, usually cost a few thousand $$ each.<\/p>\n<p>I built two weather stations.\u00a0 The first was this one in Starkville and the second as at my house here in Columbus.\u00a0\u00a0 I sold the last weather unit to help fund the overall project.<\/p>\n<p>I used a beaglebone single-board-computer (SBC) which runs a flavor of linux, and the wview software.\u00a0 Wview is able to talk to the Vaisala weather equipment.\u00a0 The station in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w0ep.us\/wxstarkville\/\">Starkville<\/a> used the beaglebone-white, an earlier version SBC which runs off of a mini-SD memory card.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w0ep.us\/wxcolumbus\/\">Columbus <\/a>station uses a later beaglebone-black which has static internal memory.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with the SD card as a fake disk drive is that SD cards wear out.\u00a0 After a year of 24&#215;7 operation the Starkville station doesn&#8217;t want to boot up any more.<\/p>\n<p>So I have acquired another beaglebone-black and I&#8217;m going to get the thing configured and running again.<\/p>\n<p>I had a bit of\u00a0 a scare with the weather station gizmo.\u00a0 When removed from the installation the bottom of the thing was full of ants, ant eggs and junk.\u00a0 I took it apart and brushed and blew it out with some compressed air.\u00a0 Then I tried to get the station to talk to me and had a real struggle.\u00a0 I stripped down the hardware completely, thinking that maybe the ants had messed up the circuit boards.\u00a0 But other than dirty there&#8217;s no problem there. \u00a0 For awhile I was sure it was dead. Finally I read the instruction book and got the thing to talk to me.<\/p>\n<p>Now I have the new beaglebone-black talking to the weather station.\u00a0 That means the serial port hardware is configured and working.\u00a0 I have Wifi working, but it needs some more attention to make sure it comes up on reboot.\u00a0 And then I need to build apache, php and wview.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[today: rest day, yesterday: 3.4 miles] We are starting to get some heat around here recently!
