{"id":4095,"date":"2013-12-28T19:48:44","date_gmt":"2013-12-29T01:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4095"},"modified":"2013-12-28T20:30:40","modified_gmt":"2013-12-29T02:30:40","slug":"bfo-coil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=4095","title":{"rendered":"BFO coil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 6 miles]<\/p>\n<p>For Christmas I received a new book about doing projects with vacuum tubes.\u00a0 That has me thinking about the HBR receiver project which I first looked into about 2 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>At that time I traded a non-working receiver project for some HBR parts.\u00a0 One item was a set of coils.<\/p>\n<p>The HBR receiver guys say that the first part to work on is the BFO (beat frequency oscillator).\u00a0 That is just an oscillator which puts out 83-87 kHz, adjustable with a 50 pf variable capacitor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=4099\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4099\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4099\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000;\" alt=\"BFO ? cans\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Scan_Pic0085.jpg\" width=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Scan_Pic0085.jpg 668w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Scan_Pic0085-578x1024.jpg 578w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I pulled out these coils and two of them are similar.\u00a0 One had a hand-written label &#8220;85 kcs BFO&#8221;.\u00a0 The other one just said &#8220;?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s inside both is actually the same little circuit with a different value for the slug-tuned coil and one resistor.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not really sure what this is for.\u00a0 But it doesn&#8217;t match what I need.\u00a0 I am contemplating the idea of just using the coil form and building my own coils.<\/p>\n<p>The original HBR plans use a Hartley Oscillator in the BFO.\u00a0 That kind of circuit uses a tapped inductor.\u00a0 I have figured out that my inductor needs to be about 8-9 milliHenries total.\u00a0 I need to wind a few turns on the slug-tuned coil form to see what the mu-factor is.\u00a0 Then I could calculate out how many turns total I think I need.\u00a0 The tap needs to go 1\/4th of the way in from the &#8220;cold&#8221; end.<\/p>\n<p>One problem I have is that I&#8217;m not sure if the tapped part should be closer to the slug (on first) or farther from the slug (on last).\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking that if the slug has more effect on the closer windings (the ones put on the form first) then I should put the &#8220;hot&#8221; end there.<\/p>\n<p>I guess I could tap it in two places, one about 1\/4th\u00a0 of the way in and another about 1\/4th of the way from the end.\u00a0 Then I could swap which end I&#8217;m using by changing the wiring to the pins of the coil.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 6 miles] For Christmas I received a new book about doing projects with vacuum tubes.\u00a0 That has me thinking about the HBR receiver project which I first looked into about 2 years ago.
