{"id":3928,"date":"2013-10-10T16:58:56","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T21:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3928"},"modified":"2013-10-10T17:02:05","modified_gmt":"2013-10-10T22:02:05","slug":"wax-processing-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3928","title":{"rendered":"Wax processing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 4 miles]<\/p>\n<p>After we did some honey gathering last weekend, this week I started in on the wax processing.\u00a0 I actually had some wax left over from our work last spring too.\u00a0 Time to get this stuff worked down.<\/p>\n<p>The impurities in the wax can get moldy.\u00a0 The wax itself won&#8217;t.\u00a0 So the best way to keep it is to purify it.<\/p>\n<p>I put wax and some water in an old coffee pot.\u00a0 I melt the wax on a hotplate.\u00a0 Then I pour the whole thing through\u00a0 about 8 layers of cheesecloth into this french press.\u00a0 I&#8217;m just using the french press as a tall beaker.<\/p>\n<p>In this picture you can see the honey water on the bottom and the melted wax on top.\u00a0 Impurities will float between the two.\u00a0 When the wax cools it hardens and shrinks.\u00a0 I can dump it out, dump the water out and use a knife to trim off some of the gunk.<\/p>\n<p>If I need to I can run this through again with another chunk and make a taller column.<\/p>\n<p>There is about a cup of wax here.\u00a0 I think ended up with about 4 cups total.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=3929\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3929\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3929\" alt=\"wax processing\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_20131008_073349_901-675x1200.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_20131008_073349_901-675x1200.jpg 675w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_20131008_073349_901-576x1024.jpg 576w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_20131008_073349_901.jpg 1836w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 4 miles] After we did some honey gathering last weekend, this week I started in on the wax processing.\u00a0 I actually had some wax left over from our work last spring too.\u00a0 Time to get this stuff worked down.
