{"id":3798,"date":"2013-08-22T08:27:26","date_gmt":"2013-08-22T13:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3798"},"modified":"2013-08-22T08:27:59","modified_gmt":"2013-08-22T13:27:59","slug":"selling-stuff-on-ebay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3798","title":{"rendered":"Selling stuff on Ebay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 4 miles]<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve gotten most of the spectrum analyzer parts cleaned up, scrapped out or sold.\u00a0 There are a few things yet to do.<\/p>\n<p>I have some valves and things that I&#8217;m still trying to sell on Ebay.\u00a0 The big pieces are all sold and gone.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t make a whale of money on any of it, but it paid for itself\u00a0 (the real income turned out to be at the scrap yard).<\/p>\n<p>Ebay charges fees for things.\u00a0 They charge &#8220;listing&#8221; fees if you use a lot of pictures or put your item up on multiple category areas.\u00a0 Then, if it sells they charge &#8220;final value&#8221; fees.\u00a0 That is 10% of the price it sold for.<\/p>\n<p>I just was reminded the other day that Ebay also charges 10% on the money that the buyer pays for shipping.\u00a0 That comes out as a seller&#8217;s fee.<\/p>\n<p>The last large piece I sold went for something like $50.\u00a0 I went to Office Depot and bought a box and some packing peanuts.\u00a0 That cost $15.\u00a0 The shipping was just under $50.\u00a0 So Ebay hit me for 10% of the purchase price ($5) and another 10% of the shipping costs (~ $5)\u00a0 Out of the $50 purchase price I actually ended up with\u00a0 (50 &#8211; 15 -5 -5 = 25) $25.\u00a0 That&#8217;s better than nothing.\u00a0 But definitely not as glamorous as 50!<\/p>\n<p>You could argue that I could put all of these costs over on the buyer.\u00a0 Maybe that is true.\u00a0 But when something only gets one or two bids I have to wonder if it would sell at all when the fees are piled up.\u00a0 The buyer in this case spent ~ $100 and that would have been upped to $125 if he paid for everything.<\/p>\n<p>The guys really cleaning up are Ebay and UPS and, in this case, Office Depot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 4 miles] I&#8217;ve gotten most of the spectrum analyzer parts cleaned up, scrapped out or sold.\u00a0 There are a few things yet to do.
