{"id":3630,"date":"2013-06-16T06:54:22","date_gmt":"2013-06-16T11:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3630"},"modified":"2013-06-16T07:05:01","modified_gmt":"2013-06-16T12:05:01","slug":"plum-jelly-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3630","title":{"rendered":"Plum Jelly 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Yesterday&#8217;s run: 10 miles, today: rest day]<\/p>\n<p>We have a &#8220;thicket&#8221; of wild plum trees on our property.\u00a0 The plum trees grow about head high, but there is some vining stuff\u00a0 and some poison ivy and various other trees and shrubs in there.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years I have been trying to get rid of the other stuff and make more space for the plums.<\/p>\n<p>This year we got a pretty good crop.\u00a0 Last year we had a wet rain when the blossoms were on and a middling crop.\u00a0 The year before that was worse.<\/p>\n<p>The plums are grape-sized, and green turning to yellow when ripe.\u00a0 We picked them over the course of about a week, trying to get the ripe ones before they fell off.\u00a0 Friday I finished up and picked a few that were not completely ripe yet.<\/p>\n<p>We have been following a recipe we found on the internet.\u00a0 Friday evening I boiled the plums and mashed them with a potato masher.\u00a0 Then we let the mash strain through a cheese cloth and a colander overnight.\u00a0 We had 9 cups of juice.\u00a0 Yesterday we boiled the juice, added 2T of pectin and 6-3\/4 cups of white sugar.\u00a0 After boiling that for about 20 minutes, into the jars it went.\u00a0 Then we sealed the jars in a 10 minute boiling water bath.\u00a0 I put labels on the jars this morning.<\/p>\n<p>We got almost 13 jars this year.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the plums are off I can get in there and battle the vines and ivy some more.\u00a0 I think I am winning, slowly.\u00a0 The main enemy is Japanese Honeysuckle vine.\u00a0 If I ever get the invasion turned back I will have to do some pruning on the plum trees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=3632\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3632\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3632\" alt=\"plums_cooking\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/plums_cooking.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Yesterday&#8217;s run: 10 miles, today: rest day] We have a &#8220;thicket&#8221; of wild plum trees on our property.\u00a0 The plum trees grow about head high, but there is some vining stuff\u00a0 and some poison ivy and various other trees and shrubs in there.
