{"id":3519,"date":"2013-04-20T20:05:43","date_gmt":"2013-04-21T01:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3519"},"modified":"2013-04-20T20:17:46","modified_gmt":"2013-04-21T01:17:46","slug":"weather-station-integration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3519","title":{"rendered":"Weather station integration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 11 miles, yesterday 4 miles]<\/p>\n<p>I finally have ALL of the pieces in one pile for my autonomous weather station.<\/p>\n<p>Today I went to Lowes and bought this big grey PVC box with the gasketed cover.\u00a0 The box is 12&#8243; x 12&#8243; with a depth of 6&#8243;.\u00a0 The inside is slightly smaller, still pretty roomy.<\/p>\n<p>Into this box goes the gel-cell battery, BeagleBone single-board-computer, solar panel charge controller, and the 12-&gt;5 VDC converter.\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to use a junction strip from Radio Shack to tie things together.<\/p>\n<p>I have a 5-wire cable coming in from the weather station:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>+12 VDC<\/li>\n<li>Ground\/shield<\/li>\n<li>Data transmit<\/li>\n<li>Data receive<\/li>\n<li>Data ground<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Then I have two wires (plus and minus) coming in from the solar panel.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the solar panel wires go straight to the charge controller.\u00a0 From there wires lead to the battery.<\/p>\n<p>Also attached to the battery is the +12 VDC bus.<\/p>\n<p>Attached to the +12 VDC bus is the weather station power and the 12-5 VDC converter (to make a +5 VDC bus).<\/p>\n<p>Also attached to the BeagleBone is a USB wifi dongle.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if that is going to work ok inside the PVC box.\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking I may have to hang it down inside a piece of plastic tubing in order to get a good signal.<\/p>\n<p>So the next step is to put everything together inside the box.\u00a0 Then I can run the system by setting it up under the table on the patio.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll put the solar panel on the table and the weather station is already mounted above the patio.\u00a0 That will let me do a complete system test.\u00a0\u00a0 My suspicion is that I may need a slightly larger gel-cell battery to run it through a 2-3 day period of cloud cover.<\/p>\n<p>I am going to use Gorilla Glue to mount a piece of\u00a0 1x lumber in the back of the box, the upper part.\u00a0 Then I&#8217;ll put the battery in the lower part.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll mount my electronics in the upper part by using wood screws and standoffs.\u00a0 One thing I need to research is whether having the electronics in the same box as the battery is going to cause any corrosion or other problems fro m outgasing when the battery is under charge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=3520\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3520\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3520\" alt=\"GE DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/GEDC0027-700x467.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/GEDC0027-700x467.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/GEDC0027-1024x684.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 11 miles, yesterday 4 miles] I finally have ALL of the pieces in one pile for my autonomous weather station.
