{"id":3483,"date":"2013-04-09T19:02:17","date_gmt":"2013-04-10T00:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3483"},"modified":"2013-04-09T19:02:17","modified_gmt":"2013-04-10T00:02:17","slug":"weather-station-project-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3483","title":{"rendered":"Weather station project report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: rest day]<\/p>\n<p>I have a complete working system now, running off of a battery.\u00a0 So I&#8217;ve put this meter in the circuit so as to measure the current requirement.<\/p>\n<p>This shows about 120 milliamps (12 volts DC).\u00a0 The little board with the red LED is a DC-DC voltage converter to change the 12 VDC down to 5 VDC for the beaglebone.\u00a0 The 12 VDC is used directly for the weather station\/ sensor unit.<\/p>\n<p>I got online and found a web page to calculate the size of the battery and solar panel I need.\u00a0 For a battery I need something around 25 mAh, and for solar panel I need a 30 watt.<\/p>\n<p>I have ordered the solar panel and I have a 17 mAh battery which will let me test the setup.<\/p>\n<p>The only other piece missing is the charge controller.\u00a0 There is a web group for a DIY (do it yourself) charge controller using an Arduino\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.freechargecontroller.org\">http:\/\/www.freechargecontroller.org<\/a>).\u00a0 That seems like overkill to me.\u00a0 I could probably use a few of the unused ports on the beaglebone to run a charge controller.\u00a0 Or I could just buy a cheap charge controller to get things started.\u00a0 I guess it depends on how efficient I want to be.\u00a0 A cheap one will not be as efficient in moving the power to the battery.\u00a0 So I am still thinking about building this part too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=3484\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3484\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3484\" alt=\"2013-04-09_18-52-45_14\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013-04-09_18-52-45_14-700x393.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013-04-09_18-52-45_14-700x393.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/2013-04-09_18-52-45_14-1024x575.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: rest day] I have a complete working system now, running off of a battery.\u00a0 So I&#8217;ve put this meter in the circuit so as to measure the current requirement.
