{"id":3395,"date":"2013-03-08T18:33:02","date_gmt":"2013-03-09T00:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3395"},"modified":"2013-03-08T18:33:51","modified_gmt":"2013-03-09T00:33:51","slug":"lcd-monitor-repair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3395","title":{"rendered":"LCD Monitor Repair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: two miles]<\/p>\n<p>I recently bought another GSA auction item.\u00a0 It is a 42 inch Pelco monitor.\u00a0 I imposed on my relatives to pick it up for me, and I recently had a visit and some kind folks dropped it off.<\/p>\n<p>We plugged it in and, sure enough, it does not work.\u00a0 The red &#8220;power&#8221; light will sometimes come on, sometimes not.<\/p>\n<p>I was able to get the back cover off without any trouble.\u00a0 It looks like some of the electrolytic capacitors are bad.\u00a0 I have ordered some replacements.<\/p>\n<p>Electrolytic capacitors are frequently used in power supplies.\u00a0 A few years ago there was something called the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capacitor_plague\">Capacitor Plague<\/a>.\u00a0 The story is that one or more factories in Taiwan tried to produce cheaper capacitors using a formula that they possibly had stolen from the Japanese.\u00a0 And they were less then successful.\u00a0 So the capacitors would work for awhile then fail, sometimes blowing up.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think these are directly the same problem, but I can&#8217;t really say.\u00a0 All I can say is that they are bulgy and need to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>In the picture I have circled the bad ones.\u00a0 You can kind of tell that their shiny tops look rounded or multi-faceted.\u00a0 The good ones have a perfectly flat top.\u00a0 The manufacturers of all such capacitors put a crease &#8216;X&#8217; in the top of each one so that they can bulge instead of splitting open.\u00a0 That keeps the guts from oozing out and making a mess on the circuit board.<\/p>\n<p>The fix is to buy similar capacitors and use a soldering gun to take the old ones out and put in the new ones.\u00a0 The new capacitors are about 75 cents each.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=3397\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3397\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3397\" alt=\"GE DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/bad_caps1-700x467.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/bad_caps1-700x467.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/bad_caps1-1024x684.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: two miles] I recently bought another GSA auction item.\u00a0 It is a 42 inch Pelco monitor.\u00a0 I imposed on my relatives to pick it up for me, and I recently had a visit and some kind folks dropped it off.
