{"id":3381,"date":"2013-03-03T17:55:24","date_gmt":"2013-03-03T23:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3381"},"modified":"2013-03-04T14:05:53","modified_gmt":"2013-03-04T20:05:53","slug":"hw-8-diial-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3381","title":{"rendered":"HW-8 dial light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: Watson Road 3.5 miles]<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I finally finished up my HW-8 dial light project.<\/p>\n<p>I had started this a few months ago.\u00a0 I obtained a piece of lexan about 3 x 2 inches and slightly less than 1\/8 inch thick.\u00a0 I heated it with a heat gun and bent it 90 degrees on one long edge.\u00a0 I trimmed and polished it so that the bent down part was just 1\/8th of an inch or so\u00a0 long.\u00a0 Then I used some &#8220;professional&#8221; type super glue to attach two bright blue square LEDs to the polished long edge farthest from the bend.\u00a0 I tried to polish the small, bent edge also.<\/p>\n<p>The HW-8 has a a two-layer front panel.\u00a0 The front-front is a painted panel attached to the unpainted box which holds the radio parts.\u00a0 The idea of this bent lexan is to get light into the space between the panels.\u00a0 A simple bulb in the box does not provide light\u00a0 through the dial.<\/p>\n<p>I left things there for awhile.\u00a0 I was not sure how to attach the wires to the LEDs without putting strain on the glue joint.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=3383\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3383\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3383\" alt=\"HW-8 with dial lights\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/GEDC0459.jpg\" width=\"318\" height=\"239\" hspace=\"30\" vspace=\"10\" \/><\/a>Yesterday I finally got it finished.\u00a0 I noticed that the light path from the LEDs through the lexan was in a cone shape.\u00a0 So I drilled some small holes along the edge near the LEDs and used those holes to support the power wires and a resistor to drop the current and protect the LEDs.\u00a0 I used a 330-ohm resistor. I figured that having the holes back near the LED edge and to either side would keep them out of the light path.<\/p>\n<p>After hooking the power wires up to a point internal to the radio, you can see that the dial lights work very well.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a somewhat confusing picture of the lexan as it is mounted.\u00a0 It just sits with the small lip wedged into the space between the front panels.\u00a0 It only goes down a little bit, not far enough to interfere with the dial mechanism.\u00a0 I am hoping that the panel pieces will retain their springiness and hold it in place over time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=3382\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3382\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3382\" alt=\"Lexan HW-8 LED dial light\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/GEDC0457.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: Watson Road 3.5 miles] Yesterday I finally finished up my HW-8 dial light project.
