{"id":3336,"date":"2013-02-15T21:01:12","date_gmt":"2013-02-16T03:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3336"},"modified":"2013-02-15T21:02:10","modified_gmt":"2013-02-16T03:02:10","slug":"silvertone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3336","title":{"rendered":"Silvertone &#8211; cont&#8217;d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: Limerock Road &#8211; 4 miles]<\/p>\n<p>My wife and I have been working on the Silvertone console radio some more.\u00a0 We got all of the capacitors changed out.\u00a0 The next thing to fix was the speaker field coil.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, this speaker had some screws to remove to get the thing out.\u00a0 I tested it for continuity with the ohm meter and it was broken.<\/p>\n<p>What to do!?!<\/p>\n<p>We could replace the speaker with a modern one, or try to fix this old one.\u00a0 I was able to acquire some magnet wire, and we rigged up a turns counter.\u00a0 Here is a picture of the coil as we were stripping off the old wire.\u00a0 Sure enough, we found three different breaks in the wire of the coil, one about 500 turns from the inside end.\u00a0 Do you know, there were 8300 turns of 32 AWG wire on that thing?<\/p>\n<p>We put the new wire on, all 8300 turns plus a little in case we missed a few.\u00a0 We turned it with\u00a0 the battery-powered drill\/driver that I received for Christmas.\u00a0 Worked pretty good.\u00a0 And we stuffed it back into the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight we were testing stuff out and determined that the speaker repair works!\u00a0 I have to say that is pretty amazing.\u00a0 We had sound coming from the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>And we have a plastic grocery bag full of old 32 AWG wire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=3337\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3337\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3337\" alt=\"coil unwinder\/winder\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG00765-20130214-1133-700x525.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG00765-20130214-1133-700x525.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG00765-20130214-1133.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: Limerock Road &#8211; 4 miles] My wife and I have been working on the Silvertone console radio some more.\u00a0 We got all of the capacitors changed out.\u00a0 The next thing to fix was the speaker field coil.
