{"id":3301,"date":"2013-02-01T20:55:50","date_gmt":"2013-02-02T02:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3301"},"modified":"2013-02-01T20:55:50","modified_gmt":"2013-02-02T02:55:50","slug":"radio-repairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3301","title":{"rendered":"Radio repairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: White House 3.4 miles]<\/p>\n<p>A couple of evenings this week we have worked on the old console radio that my wife picked up.\u00a0 We have been replacing capacitors.\u00a0 The yellow ones and the black\/white ones are new.\u00a0 This is about half of them.<\/p>\n<p>Wax\/paper capacitors go bad over time just sitting around.\u00a0 A radio this old, they are all assumed to be bad.\u00a0 New ones are 50 cents each, more or less.<\/p>\n<p>So for this radio we will be in for all new capacitors and almost all new tubes.\u00a0 We have yet to test the voice-coil speaker.\u00a0 We may end up replacing that as well.\u00a0 The other coils should be ok.\u00a0 The tuning capacitor should be ok.\u00a0 Power and IF transformers should be ok.\u00a0 But we shall see.<\/p>\n<p>We have the schematic.\u00a0 In theory we could build one of these from scratch.\u00a0 But in practice it doesn&#8217;t work that way.\u00a0 So we will replace the obvious stuff and then see what we get.\u00a0 From there it will be troubleshooting: finding individual problems and fixing them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=3304\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3304\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3304\" alt=\"GE DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/GEDC04321.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: White House 3.4 miles] A couple of evenings this week we have worked on the old console radio that my wife picked up.\u00a0 We have been replacing capacitors.\u00a0 The yellow ones and the black\/white ones are new.\u00a0 This is about half of them.
