{"id":3155,"date":"2012-11-23T18:26:04","date_gmt":"2012-11-24T00:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3155"},"modified":"2012-11-23T18:26:04","modified_gmt":"2012-11-24T00:26:04","slug":"ncx-5-done-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3155","title":{"rendered":"NCX-5 &#8211; done for now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: rest day]<\/p>\n<p>After nearly another day wasted on this old radio I finally found the problem.<\/p>\n<p>As frequently happens, most of the exercise was the result of a self-inflicted problem.\u00a0 I replaced a capacitor because I thought it was the wrong value.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t.\u00a0 And when I put in the new one I accidentally touched another part and made a very small flaw on it, which turned out to be the thing that caused the hours of searching.<\/p>\n<p>I finally found the problem.\u00a0 A small RF choke near the replaced capacitor was damaged.\u00a0 I had to wind a new one.\u00a0 (My inductance\/capacitance meter comes in really handy for this!)\u00a0 Once I did that I was pretty much back in business.<\/p>\n<p>I still have some VFO voltage regulation problems.\u00a0 I put in a new zener diode.\u00a0 We shall see if it can take the heat and dissipation.\u00a0 If that doesn&#8217;t hold up I can go to a three-terminal regulator or get a bigger zener.<\/p>\n<p>But the thing is playing now.\u00a0 It still has the chirp on CW.\u00a0 I talked to a guy tonight in Ohio and he said the chirp was not objectionable.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m glad I was able to eventually find the problem.\u00a0 I enjoy the search.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not really very organized about it.\u00a0 This case was the usual: last thing touched turned out to be the neighborhood of what had gone wrong.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: rest day] After nearly another day wasted on this old radio I finally found the problem.
