{"id":3151,"date":"2012-11-22T20:13:50","date_gmt":"2012-11-23T02:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3151"},"modified":"2012-11-22T20:21:14","modified_gmt":"2012-11-23T02:21:14","slug":"ncx-5-one-step-forward-two-steps-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=3151","title":{"rendered":"NCX-5  one step forward, two steps back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 3 miles]<\/p>\n<p>We had a nice Thanksgiving meal today, had relatives over.\u00a0 It was a very nice day.<\/p>\n<p>On the radio front, I worked some more on the old National NCX-5.\u00a0 Everything was running ok but it was giving me a zoop zoop chirp on CW.\u00a0 I spent some time looking at the VFO.\u00a0 There was about a 2 hertz change in the VFO when I keyed up.<\/p>\n<p>Long ago, when I first got this thing, one of the big problems was that it changed frequency from transmit to receive.\u00a0 At that time it was changing something like 2 kHz.\u00a0 I finally narrowed it down to a capacitor in the VFO buffer circuit.\u00a0 The schematic says &#8217;10&#8217;.\u00a0 Today I was looking at that and I noticed that the one I had put in there (probably in 2002) was really a\u00a0 1oo pf, not a 10 pf. (!)<\/p>\n<p>I replaced that one with a real 10 pf capacitor.\u00a0 No more T\/R frequency shift!\u00a0 I was elated.<\/p>\n<p>But another problem now.\u00a0 Some time after that was working I now have no receive noise on SSB or CW, only on AM.\u00a0 And, I am no longer getting any output on transmit.\u00a0 I know that was working just a few minutes ago.\u00a0 I have either burned something up or messed it up somehow.<\/p>\n<p>After some more playing around I had nothing coming out of the VFO.\u00a0 That was the little zener that I had put in as a voltage stabilizer (in trying to fix the T\/R problem).\u00a0 It shorted out.\u00a0 Take that out, now I have VFO and I have receive on AM again.\u00a0 Still no receive on SSB\/CW and no transmit.<\/p>\n<p>I need to check some of the fundamental voltages, make sure I have the basics covered.\u00a0 I hope I haven&#8217;t broken something important!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 3 miles] We had a nice Thanksgiving meal today, had relatives over.\u00a0 It was a very nice day.
