{"id":2974,"date":"2012-09-20T17:37:12","date_gmt":"2012-09-20T22:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2974"},"modified":"2012-09-20T17:37:48","modified_gmt":"2012-09-20T22:37:48","slug":"hit-and-miss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2974","title":{"rendered":"Hit and Miss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: Schaffer&#8217;s Chapel &#8211; 5 miles]<\/p>\n<p>Another thing we saw at the Iowa State Fair:\u00a0 antique engines.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the old days\u00a0 (before my time) they used single cylinder kerosene\/gas engines to run things like irrigation wells.\u00a0\u00a0 They had gas engines to run clothes washers and other household appliances.\u00a0 I guess this would particularly have been good before rural electrification put electricity on farms.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway.\u00a0 They had a display of &#8220;hit and miss&#8221; gas engines at the fair.\u00a0 If you ever see one run you will know why they call them that.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a big flywheel, about the size of a hubcap or bigger.\u00a0 There is a mechanism for holding the valves open until the RPM gets below a certain point.\u00a0 So the thing goes &#8216;pop&#8217;\u00a0 round round round round &#8216;pop&#8217; round round round, etc.<\/p>\n<p>They are cool.\u00a0 Cool like old cars and steam locomotives and radios with tubes inside.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I get the hankering to have one.\u00a0 But then&#8230;. I remember that one of the reasons they moved away from such stuff was that it was more expensive.\u00a0 And another was that it was more dangerous.\u00a0 And I remember that I really don&#8217;t like working on cars that much\u00a0 (I have a pickup truck old enough to have &#8220;antique&#8221; license plates.)\u00a0 &lt;sigh&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Here is one thing that I did have at the Fair:\u00a0 a deep fried, sugar sprinkled Snickers bar\u00a0 (on a stick!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=2975\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2975\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2975\" title=\"deep fried snickers\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG00642-20120811-1449-700x525.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG00642-20120811-1449-700x525.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG00642-20120811-1449.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: Schaffer&#8217;s Chapel &#8211; 5 miles] Another thing we saw at the Iowa State Fair:\u00a0 antique engines.
