{"id":2848,"date":"2012-08-20T16:01:46","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T21:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2848"},"modified":"2012-08-20T16:03:08","modified_gmt":"2012-08-20T21:03:08","slug":"returned-from-a-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2848","title":{"rendered":"Returned from a trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: about 3\/4 of a mile]<\/p>\n<p>We returned yesterday from a 10 day trip to Iowa.\u00a0 While there we spent two days at the Iowa State Fair.\u00a0 that was a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>Our driving to Iowa and back took us through the southern tip of Illinois, the western tip of Kentucky and the western part of Tennessee.\u00a0 I had not realized before that Abe Lincoln, being from Kentucky, could have been born west of his later home in Springfield, IL.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think he was, but he could have been.\u00a0 I guess that is just a long way of saying that parts of Kentucky are more westerly than parts of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>We drove through Cairo, IL twice, on the way up and on the way back.\u00a0 What a depressing place.\u00a0 You&#8217;d think that any reasonably business-minded town could come up with a way to cash in on being at the confluence of the two biggest barge-traffic rivers in the USA.\u00a0 But they don&#8217;t even have an overlook to see the\u00a0 place (and the two big bridges that span the two rivers just north of the confluence).<\/p>\n<p>We really enjoyed driving through Iowa.\u00a0 The farms are neat and tidy (mostly).\u00a0 We had cheese curds fresh from the cheese dairy at Kalona, IA and a dutch letter in Pella, IA.\u00a0 I liked the looks of western TN also, except for Memphis (we&#8217;ve been through Memphis before, but dodged around\u00a0 it this time.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=2850\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2850\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2850\" title=\"steamboats - historical marker\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG00663-20120819-0904-700x933.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG00663-20120819-0904-700x933.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG00663-20120819-0904.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: about 3\/4 of a mile] We returned yesterday from a 10 day trip to Iowa.\u00a0 While there we spent two days at the Iowa State Fair.\u00a0 that was a lot of fun.
