{"id":2775,"date":"2012-07-12T19:31:46","date_gmt":"2012-07-13T00:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2775"},"modified":"2012-07-13T05:47:07","modified_gmt":"2012-07-13T10:47:07","slug":"aprs-propagation-monitor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2775","title":{"rendered":"APRS propagation monitor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 4+ miles &#8211; Limerock Road]<\/p>\n<p>I think I mentioned this before.<\/p>\n<p>I did a bit of work on my ham radio laptop computer.\u00a0 I got the soundmodem (soundcard modem program) running and I&#8217;m able to monitor digital packet radio traffic on the APRS frequency\u00a0 (144.390).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m parsing the APRS packets, watching for local packets, ones that have not been repeated by other stations.\u00a0 APRS packets usually have latitude and longitude in them.\u00a0 So the idea is to show the distance and direction of the stations from which I am receiving packets directly.\u00a0 I want to do that so I can tell if a 2 meter band opening is happening.<\/p>\n<p>I have had mixed results, mainly because there is not a lot of APRS traffic going on around here.<\/p>\n<p>But the concept seems to work.\u00a0 So I posted my script to the TAPR APRS email list.\u00a0 Today I found a bug, which I&#8217;ll have to fix and then post the fixed version.<\/p>\n<p>I would like to eventually have email or SMS notifications if a station pops up from far away.\u00a0 But as of yet I&#8217;m happy if I see anything at all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 4+ miles &#8211; Limerock Road] I think I mentioned this before.
