{"id":2653,"date":"2012-05-28T17:42:52","date_gmt":"2012-05-28T22:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2653"},"modified":"2012-05-28T17:42:52","modified_gmt":"2012-05-28T22:42:52","slug":"aprs-soundmodem-xastir-and-recovery-of-old-info","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2653","title":{"rendered":"APRS, soundmodem, xastir and recovery of old info"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: Watson Road]<\/p>\n<p>We had a good Memorial Day today.\u00a0 Had the relatives over to our house and had a great time.\u00a0 There were 10 of us in the house and everyone got along ok.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a nice thing.<\/p>\n<p>I spent some time yesterday and again today on my ham radio laptop.\u00a0 This thing is an old IBM Thinkpad from 1999-2000.\u00a0 It has less than 200K of memory.\u00a0 I&#8217;m running a light version of Debian Linux on it called antiX.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t have enough memory to run a browser, but it will run an X-window desktop without too much trouble.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been getting more into VHF CW\/SSB and I wanted to have a means to see if the band is open to longer distance conversations.\u00a0 So I decided to install APRS software so that I could receive APRS location packets and map them on my screen.\u00a0 That would show me what directions are open from this location.<\/p>\n<p>I am using the internal sound card and a program called soundmodem to do the TNC\/demodulating chores.\u00a0 Then I am using the xastir program to do the mapping.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve done all of this before.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t remember how I had done it. But I did remember that I made note of it in a posting to a usenet bulletin board.\u00a0 Today I <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/rec.radio.amateur.digital.misc\/browse_thread\/thread\/40a0d8ff1412aebd\/d59a7f9a061abe68?q=kc0atc+soundmodem#d59a7f9a061abe68\">found that posting<\/a> with google groups.\u00a0 Followed the info there, and sure enough, it works.<\/p>\n<p>I really like having the internet around.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: Watson Road] We had a good Memorial Day today.\u00a0 Had the relatives over to our house and had a great time.\u00a0 There were 10 of us in the house and everyone got along ok.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a nice thing.
