{"id":2526,"date":"2012-05-01T14:51:12","date_gmt":"2012-05-01T19:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2526"},"modified":"2012-05-01T14:51:12","modified_gmt":"2012-05-01T19:51:12","slug":"architectural-details","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2526","title":{"rendered":"Architectural details"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: two miles]<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t suppose this view of\u00a0 the inside of a men&#8217;s room at a McDonald&#8217;s restaurant really means much to anyone.\u00a0 But I found it interesting.\u00a0 And it is my blog, so there you have it.<\/p>\n<p>When I was in college I took courses in architectural history.\u00a0 That was probably my favorite part of the architecture curriculum; way better than freehand drawing (amen!).\u00a0 And one of the guys they talked about was a fellow named Ludwig Mies van der Rohe,\u00a0 one of the pillars of the modernist movement of the mid-20th century.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I remember the instructor in that class making a point of how he focused on materials: raw expression of the structure of the building;\u00a0 all the little pieces fit together to make a whole.<\/p>\n<p>So here we are in the McDonald&#8217;s restroom.\u00a0 The floor tiles go up the wall for 1\/2 a tile.\u00a0 I like that.\u00a0 The metal strip at the corner.\u00a0 I like that.\u00a0 The wall tiles are twice the width of the floor tiles.\u00a0 Cool.\u00a0 But the tile installer put them in so that every joint in the wall is 1 inch offset from the joint in the floor tiles.\u00a0 Boo.\u00a0 He could have lined them up.\u00a0 He could have put the wall joints in the center of the floor tiles.\u00a0 He could have done a lot of things.\u00a0 But a steady 1 inch offset just doesn&#8217;t cut it for me.\u00a0 How about you?<\/p>\n<p>(You can&#8217;t see from this picture, but that one inch offset ran the whole wall.\u00a0 And similar offsets\u00a0 on all the other walls)<\/p>\n<p>Mies van der Rohe would have had the tile contractor&#8217;s head on a platter.\u00a0 (or so I imagine).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=2527\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2527\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2527\" title=\"bad tile\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/IMG00556-20120427-1411-700x933.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/IMG00556-20120427-1411-700x933.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/IMG00556-20120427-1411.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: two miles] I don&#8217;t suppose this view of\u00a0 the inside of a men&#8217;s room at a McDonald&#8217;s restaurant really means much to anyone.\u00a0 But I found it interesting.\u00a0 And it is my blog, so there you have it.
