I’ve been looking at the old bank balance and also at a stack of radio stuff that I have which I am not using.\u00a0 It finally dawned on me that I have some stuff I could either use or sell if only I would dive in and make a few repairs.<\/p>\n
The Kenwood TS-830 is a 1980’s vintage HF transceiver.\u00a0 It has the reputation for\u00a0 having a very sensitive receiver.\u00a0 I bought mine off of ebay a few years ago.\u00a0 It worked just fine for awhile.\u00a0 It started to get very flakey so I put it under the desk.<\/p>\n
I investigated\u00a0 (google is my friend!).\u00a0 The problem usually is the bandswitch.\u00a0 They used little rivets to hold the switch contacts into place, touching circuit board traces.\u00a0 And the little rivets get loose over time and make just intermittent contact with the board traces.\u00a0 The solution is to take the RF board out, take the bandswitch sub-boards out, and solder the contacts to the traces.\u00a0 There are 7 sub-boards and each has 12 switch positions.<\/p>\n
I’ve got the board out.\u00a0 I need to buy some solder wick so I can get the sub-boards out neatly.<\/p>\n
