{"id":2360,"date":"2012-03-26T20:09:22","date_gmt":"2012-03-27T01:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2360"},"modified":"2012-03-28T04:57:54","modified_gmt":"2012-03-28T09:57:54","slug":"concealed-carry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2360","title":{"rendered":"Concealed carry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: nothing yet]<\/p>\n<p>I grew up in Iowa, and I don&#8217;t remember seeing anyone carry a handgun except for policemen and security guards.\u00a0 Later I lived in Chicago for awhile.\u00a0 I remember seeing some armored car guys servicing a bank in the Chicago loop.\u00a0 One guy carried the bags and another guy had a large revolver, unholstered, pointed at the ground as they went into the bank.\u00a0 Serious business.<\/p>\n<p>The recent political trend has been toward a resurgence of 2nd Amendment rights, maybe led by the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/More-Guns-Less-Crime-Understanding\/dp\/0226493636\"> More Guns Less Crime<\/a> work by researcher John Lott which came out in 1998.\u00a0 Since then many states have loosened their handgun laws.\u00a0 Such loosening continues today.<\/p>\n<p>In many western states it is perfectly legal to carry a handgun in a holster strapped to your side.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t have to have a permit or pass a class or anything.\u00a0 That is called &#8220;open carry&#8221;, everybody can see what you are doing.<\/p>\n<p>But some people just don&#8217;t like guns and having one openly displayed changes the social interaction.\u00a0\u00a0 So you might want to put on a jacket and cover up that gun when you go into the\u00a0 convenience store on the corner.\u00a0 BAD IDEA.\u00a0 Covering the gun makes it &#8220;concealed carry&#8221;\u00a0 and that is considered to be against the law.\u00a0 I think the idea there is that you could be trying to be sneaky and ambush someone by whipping out your hidden firepower.<\/p>\n<p>The answer to that then is the &#8220;concealed carry permit&#8221;.\u00a0 To get one of those you have to go through an approval and identification process with local law enforcement.\u00a0 In Colorado it was the county sheriff&#8217;s office.\u00a0 Here in Mississippi it is the Highway Patrol.\u00a0 And there is a fee, something around $150.\u00a0 If you have a concealed carry permit you must keep your firearm concealed.\u00a0\u00a0 If you are engaged in regular business by law enforcement, I think you have to tell them and be prepared to show your permit, etc.\u00a0 Nobody wants a surprised policeman.\u00a0 Otherwise, nobody knows, hush-hush and all that.<\/p>\n<p>So if you really need to be carrying a gun you either need to have it strapped on in plain sight or have permission to carry it in your purse or pocket, backpack, whatever.\u00a0 But if you have one in those places, with permission,\u00a0 you can&#8217;t show it to anybody unless it is a dire emergency.\u00a0 Waving it around for no reason is called &#8220;brandishing&#8221;
