{"id":2163,"date":"2012-02-06T16:52:20","date_gmt":"2012-02-06T22:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2163"},"modified":"2012-02-06T16:59:57","modified_gmt":"2012-02-06T22:59:57","slug":"more-on-homebrew-receiver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2163","title":{"rendered":"More on homebrew receiver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: rest day]<\/p>\n<p>I worked a bit more on <a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=2152\">that homebrew 13-tube HF receiver<\/a> that I picked up at the Jackson hamfest.<\/p>\n<p>With much help from the &#8220;boatanchors&#8221; forum on eham.net, I now have it working, in a manner of speaking.<\/p>\n<p>After getting some help with figuring out what the IF frequencies were (1415 kHz and 85 kHz), I was able to hook up a signal generator and tune in part of 40 meters.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I also discovered that hi-z headphones were required.\u00a0 Then I noticed that the LO was inoperative because the tube base wiring did not fit the tube in that socket.\u00a0 Back to the forum, and I now have a 6C4 in that socket and the LO is working.\u00a0 So, we have a receiver!<\/p>\n<p>There are still quite a few problems with it.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiqueradio.org\/recap.htm\">I think all of the large caps will need replaced<\/a>.\u00a0 The multi-part power supply cap is leaking brown fluid and there are other wax and &#8220;black beauty&#8221; caps that are known points of failure.\u00a0 Then it will need some attention in the rf-gain control (if cap replacement doesn&#8217;t fix it).\u00a0 Right now it is only configured to cover the sideband portions of 80\/40\/20 meters.\u00a0 Not really my usual stomping grounds.\u00a0 I could adjust it to cover the CW sub-bands instead.\u00a0 And the bandswitch\/tuning mechanism needs some mechanical help.
