{"id":1880,"date":"2011-12-12T20:49:21","date_gmt":"2011-12-13T02:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1880"},"modified":"2013-02-01T14:16:04","modified_gmt":"2013-02-01T20:16:04","slug":"qrp-dx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1880","title":{"rendered":"QRP DX"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: rest day]<\/p>\n<p>At the junction of QRP and DX is this kind of thing.<\/p>\n<p>I received a QSL card in the mail the other day.\u00a0 N2EIK and I had a contact last year: 12\/31\/2010.\u00a0 I have it in my log.\u00a0 I just received his card, then\u00a0 I filled out a postcard and sent it back to him in the SASE he had included.<\/p>\n<p>The most interesting part of that particular radio conversation was that N2EIK (John) was in Kingston, NY and I was in Columbus, MS.\u00a0 He was running 250 mW output.\u00a0 That is 1\/4 of a watt.<\/p>\n<p>I was using an old Drake R-4B receiver.\u00a0 For the transmitter I was using an attempt at the &#8220;First Transmitter&#8221; in the EMRFD book\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arrl.org\/shop\/Experimental-Methods-in-RF-Design\">Experimental Methods in RF Design<\/a>).\u00a0 It puts out about 2 watts.<\/p>\n<p>Dave included a little note with his QSL card noting that we did 979 miles on 1\/4 of a watt.<\/p>\n<p>One watt is about what it takes to run one of those little LED nightlights.\u00a0 One fourth of a watt is not very much.\u00a0 I could hear John turning off and on his little nightlight (so to speak) nearly 1000 miles from here.<\/p>\n<p>For those keeping score at home, my antenna at the time was a G5RV, flat-top at 20 ft oriented N-S.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know what antenna or receiver John was using.<\/p>\n<p>(Edited:\u00a0 I was repeatedly using the wrong name!\u00a0 I hope I have it right now)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=1883\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1883\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1883\" title=\"n2eik QSL\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Scan_Pic0046-700x411.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Scan_Pic0046-700x411.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Scan_Pic0046-1024x601.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Scan_Pic0046.jpg 1127w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: rest day] At the junction of QRP and DX is this kind of thing.
