{"id":1876,"date":"2011-12-11T16:41:11","date_gmt":"2011-12-11T22:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1876"},"modified":"2011-12-11T16:41:11","modified_gmt":"2011-12-11T22:41:11","slug":"qrp-rebuffed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1876","title":{"rendered":"QRP rebuffed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Yesterday&#8217;s run:\u00a0 12 miles, Today&#8217;s run: 5.5 miles with wife (left dog at home)]<\/p>\n<p>I was on the radio a bit today, doing some CW\u00a0 (morse code).\u00a0 I heard a guy calling CQ so I answered him.\u00a0 He gave me a 589 report.<\/p>\n<p>On my turn I gave him a 589 report also.\u00a0\u00a0 And I told him that I was running QRP\u00a0 (low power) at 5 watts output.<\/p>\n<p>On his next turn, he said something like: I&#8217;ll let you have fun with your qrp, 73.<\/p>\n<p>(73 means &#8220;Best regards&#8221;.\u00a0 It is the generally used &#8220;goodbye&#8221; with CW.\u00a0 It has a polite\/positive meaning.)<\/p>\n<p>I answered with &#8220;73&#8221; and we parted ways.\u00a0 He moved down about 5 kc and started calling CQ again.<\/p>\n<p>Usually people are neutral or interested in other stations running QRP.\u00a0 QRP often means that the station is homebrew or built from a kit.\u00a0 I my case this radio was built from a bag-of-parts kit and I&#8217;m really happy how well it works. (It&#8217;s a Willamette, designed by Jason NT7S.) \u00a0 But that is neither here nor there.<\/p>\n<p>This guy was the other way; he had a negative reaction to my being QRP.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know why it would matter.\u00a0 If he really was hearing me that well (589 is pretty good!) why would he care?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had one other case that I remember of someone shutting me down because of being QRP.\u00a0 The guy in that case wasn&#8217;t even polite about it, he just quit the conversation and started calling for someone else to reply.<\/p>\n<p>I do have non-QRP radios.
