[today’s run: rest day]<\/p>\n

I’m going to do a bit of traveling.\u00a0 Of course I will take my laptop (Windows XP) with me.\u00a0 I also wanted to have a linux machine available.<\/p>\n

I spotted the hard drive of my prior laptop, now in one of those USB drive boxes, and decided I should install Linux on that.<\/p>\n

Our servers at work use Scientific Linux 5.3, so I decided to go with that.<\/p>\n

I found a webpage<\/a> about making a bootable USB drive and got that working.\u00a0 It isn’t exactly a cookbook, but it helped me get the GRUB part.<\/p>\n

The next problem is the network device.\u00a0 SL 5.3 is pretty old,\u00a0 I had to download a newer version of the e1000 Intel network driver from here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now I have the network working and I am doing a “yum update” to get everything caught up.<\/p>\n

I think this will actually work ok when I get it all going.\u00a0 And since it is on the external USB drive it will not modify my internal hard drive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
