{"id":1702,"date":"2011-11-07T20:27:37","date_gmt":"2011-11-08T02:27:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1702"},"modified":"2011-11-07T20:29:04","modified_gmt":"2011-11-08T02:29:04","slug":"scientific-linux-5-3-on-dell-latitude-e6510-laptop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1702","title":{"rendered":"Scientific Linux 5.3 on Dell Latitude E6510 laptop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[today&#8217;s run: rest day]<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to do a bit of traveling.\u00a0 Of course I will take my laptop (Windows XP) with me.\u00a0 I also wanted to have a linux machine available.<\/p>\n<p>I spotted the hard drive of my prior laptop, now in one of those USB drive boxes, and decided I should install Linux on that.<\/p>\n<p>Our servers at work use Scientific Linux 5.3, so I decided to go with that.<\/p>\n<p>I found a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brunel.ac.uk\/~eesridr\/extlinux.html\">webpage<\/a> about making a bootable USB drive and got that working.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t exactly a cookbook, but it helped me get the GRUB part.<\/p>\n<p>The next problem is the network device.\u00a0 SL 5.3 is pretty old,\u00a0 I had to download a newer version of the e1000 Intel network driver from <a href=\"http:\/\/downloadcenter.intel.com\/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&amp;ProductID=987&amp;DwnldID=9180&amp;strOSs=39&amp;OSFullName=Linux*&amp;lang=eng#help\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now I have the network working and I am doing a &#8220;yum update&#8221; to get everything caught up.<\/p>\n<p>I think this will actually work ok when I get it all going.\u00a0 And since it is on the external USB drive it will not modify my internal hard drive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[today&#8217;s run: rest day] I&#8217;m going to do a bit of traveling.\u00a0 Of course I will take my laptop (Windows XP) with me.\u00a0 I also wanted to have a linux machine available.
