{"id":1674,"date":"2011-10-30T18:08:12","date_gmt":"2011-10-30T23:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1674"},"modified":"2011-10-30T19:58:37","modified_gmt":"2011-10-31T00:58:37","slug":"success-with-toner-transfer-pc-board","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1674","title":{"rendered":"Success with toner-transfer PC board"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run:\u00a0 2 miles with wife and dog]<\/p>\n<p>After half a dozen aborted tries I finally got a good PC board made.<\/p>\n<p>This is part of the GPS-DO project.\u00a0 The GPS itself is a Resolution-T from Trimble.\u00a0 It has a small set (2&#215;4) of header pins which are used for the I\/O.\u00a0 It also has an antenna jack for the GPS antenna.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want to order some kind of cable to attach to those pins.\u00a0 I do have a mating header piece that I can mount on a PC board.\u00a0 So I decided to make a small board using that piece and through-wire connections with traces to each header pin.\u00a0 That way I can unplug the thing if I need to take it out.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve done ok with simple toner-transfer boards before, I was kind of mystified as to\u00a0 why this time it wasn&#8217;t working.\u00a0 So this blog post will help remind me how I did it:<\/p>\n<p>1) I used the cover from a glossy alumni news magazine thing that came from ISU.\u00a0 The cover was a bit thicker than the pages.\u00a0 Thin and glossy usually jams in the printer but this thicker stuff worked well. \u00a0 Don&#8217;t use the part with the printed mailing address, that may have been laser printed on.<\/p>\n<p>2) More about pressure, less about heat.\u00a0 My failed attempts, I was trying to use a lot of heat.\u00a0 This time I used more pressure.\u00a0 I put a dab of glue-stick on a non-patterned part of the printed paper and stuck it on the clean, cold pc board.<\/p>\n<p>3) I covered with a clean sheet of white paper<\/p>\n<p>4) Ironed with the clothes iron on highest setting, no-steam,\u00a0 using the edge of the iron to really burnish it on .\u00a0 I had well worked-over that sheet of clean white paper, showing the outline of my pattern paper and of the board.\u00a0 I moved the white paper and did it some more.<\/p>\n<p>5) Peel off the plain white.\u00a0 Soaking in water for 10+ minutes, the pattern paper fell right off.\u00a0 I used a small scrub brush to finish it up.<\/p>\n<p>6) Thin sharpie to touch up any traces that had thin spots<\/p>\n<p>7) Also, don&#8217;t forget to printed it as &#8220;mirrored&#8221;.\u00a0 The transfer process mirrors it back to what you see in Eagle Cad.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run:\u00a0 2 miles with wife and dog] After half a dozen aborted tries I finally got a good PC board made.
