{"id":1593,"date":"2011-10-19T18:59:04","date_gmt":"2011-10-19T23:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1593"},"modified":"2011-10-19T19:12:54","modified_gmt":"2011-10-20T00:12:54","slug":"ham-radio-club-dmraa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1593","title":{"rendered":"Ham radio club &#8211; DMRAA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[today&#8217;s run: 3 miles with the dog\u00a0 (to the white house)]<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not exactly sure how my father got interested in ham radio.\u00a0 But I do remember going with him to the home of a fellow church member who was a WW2 radio operator and long time ham.<\/p>\n<p>Later, my dad got his ham license and I tagged along at various times.\u00a0 He took me to the Des Moines Radio Amateur Association meetings a few times.\u00a0 One time we went up on the roof of the KRNT building, the base of the tower, the\u00a0 &#8220;Red &#8211; warmer weather ahead&#8221; weather beacon.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years I have collected a fair amount of ham radio literature, sales brochures, old catalogs, etc.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know exactly how I got this thing, but I have a program for the 1954 DMRAA ARRL convention at the Hotel Fort Des Moines.\u00a0 (This is quite awhile before I came on the scene.)<\/p>\n<p>The president of the DMRAA was Bob Denniston (W0NWX) a long time DX-er.\u00a0 Earlier in 1954 Denniston and four others from Iowa made the famous Clipperton Island DX-pedition that used the Hallicrafters SX-88 receiver.\u00a0 Sure enough, there are two slots in the program for hour-long presentations about the Clipperton trip.\u00a0 Later Denniston became ARRL president and eventually retired to the British Virgin Islands.\u00a0 There&#8217;s quite a bit on the internet about Denniston.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"DMRAA\" href=\"http:\/\/dmraa.com\/\">DMRAA<\/a> is still around today.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1596\" href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=1596\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1596\" title=\"DRMAA 1954 convention\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan_Pic0043-700x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan_Pic0043-700x1024.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan_Pic0043-699x1024.jpg 699w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Scan_Pic0043.jpg 1282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[today&#8217;s run: 3 miles with the dog\u00a0 (to the white house)] I&#8217;m not exactly sure how my father got interested in ham radio.\u00a0 But I do remember going with him to the home of a fellow church member who was a WW2 radio operator and long time ham.
