Here’s another picture of the Hallicrafters SX-11.<\/p>\n
Our new capacitors came today via UPS.\u00a0 The things we are replacing are the yellow tubular paper\/wax components.\u00a0 I think there is a blue one also.\u00a0 I believe we counted 17 of them here and one on the top side.\u00a0 Capacitors are made of metal foil and pasty dielectric stuff.\u00a0 Over time they lose their gumption.<\/p>\n
This receiver is 1936 vintage.\u00a0 It was a mid-range set in it’s day.\u00a0 It has 11 tubes and a superheterodyne<\/a> design.\u00a0\u00a0 It has a “tuning-eye”<\/a> tube. The “sx” indicates that\u00a0 it has a crystal filter for better narrow reception. It does not have a speaker, you either have to listen on headphones or hook up an external speaker.<\/p>\n Hallicrafters was a good company.\u00a0 They survived in the radio business up into the transistor era\u00a0 when both technological changes and Japanese imports killed off many old-line radio manufacturers.<\/p>\n Maybe this weekend we can start on the capacitor replacements.\u00a0 Then we will apply voltage and check out how things look on various tube sockets.\u00a0 If that goes well we add the tubes and see if it will play.<\/p>\n
