{"id":1021,"date":"2011-07-08T20:33:04","date_gmt":"2011-07-09T01:33:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1021"},"modified":"2011-07-08T20:50:31","modified_gmt":"2011-07-09T01:50:31","slug":"shiney-new-can","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?p=1021","title":{"rendered":"Shiny new can"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 3 miles ]<\/p>\n<p>Topic today is an old\u00a0 Heathkit Cantenna 50 ohm RF dummy load.<\/p>\n<p>A dummy load is useful for two reasons.\u00a0 It lets you do antenna-type things without actually sending out a signal\u00a0 (or much of one anyway).\u00a0 And, it acts as a standard output load that you can use to tune your equipment before actually putting it on the air.\u00a0 This one is supposed to be good\u00a0 for\u00a0 frequency up to 300 Mhz and for about 1 kilowatt of output power, for short periods.<\/p>\n<p>The thing is basically a large 50 ohm non-inductive resistor that hangs off of the lid, down into a bath of mineral oil.\u00a0 The oil allows the resistor to dissipate heat more efficiently, therefore making the load useful with higher transmitter power than the resistor alone.<\/p>\n<p>I have had this one for awhile and have kept it in a plastic pan like you might use to wash your feet, about that size.\u00a0 The problem was that the can leaked mineral oil and generally made a\u00a0 mess.<\/p>\n<p>This week I finally got a clue and decided to buy a new can!\u00a0 Sure enough, they had brand new, empty 1 gallon paint cans at Lowes home improvement store, so I bought one.\u00a0 I filtered the old oil (about half of it was in the basin and half still in the can) and put it all in the new can.\u00a0 So far it has stayed in there.<\/p>\n<p>Success!\u00a0 I think I will keep it in the basin for awhile yet.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the picture:\u00a0 it is sitting on the hood of my old truck.\u00a0 Shiny new paint can, same old lid and fixtures.\u00a0 The original can was painted black, so the lid still has some black on it.\u00a0 Maybe I will repaint it.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1022\" href=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/?attachment_id=1022\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1022\" title=\"IMG00426-20110708-2015\" src=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG00426-20110708-2015-700x933.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG00426-20110708-2015-700x933.jpg 700w, http:\/\/w0ep.us\/OM\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG00426-20110708-2015.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Today&#8217;s run: 3 miles ] Topic today is an old\u00a0 Heathkit Cantenna 50 ohm RF dummy load.
