counting the chickens

[Today’s run: 2 miles, in the rain]

Picture today is of an employee award I received while working at Intellistor/Fujitsu(FCPA)  in 1998 (?).

I worked at Intellistor for a couple of years and I received this award toward the end of that time.

I think I did a pretty good job while I was there, no great shakes, but I got things done that were assigned to me.

I don’t really remember why they gave me this award.  It was a monthly thing, kind of “employee of the month”.  But I don’t remember if there was some specific thing I did that was deemed to be exceptional.

The old saying goes, “Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.”  I think I might amend that to be, “Don’t count your chickens before they are fried and on your plate.”

You never can tell what is going to happen.  Well, maybe you can, but I sure can’t.  Within a few weeks of getting this I was out the door and looking for a different job.

The economy in Japan had a downturn and the management of Fujitsu decided to put less money into R&D.  So, there were layoffs.  And eventually Intellistor closed.  I was kind of a 5th wheel in the IT department and ended up going early in the layoffs.  I don’t hold a grudge or anything, it was logical that the more core-function people be kept.  My boss was easy to work for and did a good job in the layoff process.  (I expect it was hard on him, but I didn’t think about that at the time.)  After a few more months the whole place was gone anyway.

Within a month I had a better job, the job I still have, am glad to have.
